Making Indian Farming Water Efficient — For the Next Generation
Rooted in the realities of Indian farming. Powered by world-class AI. Built for the farmers who feed a nation.
Explore Our Mission
Where India's water future is being shaped — one farmer at a time.
Our Mission
We save water. We empower farmers. We prove that AI can serve humanity.
India's agriculture sector consumes over 80% of the country's freshwater – yet a significant proportion is lost to inefficient practices, poor timing, and a lack of access to modern irrigation knowledge. The farmers who feed a nation of 1.4 billion people often make critical water decisions without the personalised advice or robust data they need, and with policies that don't always reflect the ground realities they face.
Dhara is a social enterprise rooted deeply in the realities of Indian farming, built on a powerful idea: that AI, combined with world-class partnerships and an unwavering commitment to education, can transform water usage. We build connections and advocate for policies shaped by the real issues farmers face, not the other way around. By putting water-smart farming knowledge and personalised advice into every farmer's hands, we ensure every drop saved today leaves a better world for the next generation, proving AI's profound ability to serve humanity.

Why Now
A Convergence of Crisis and Opportunity
Three forces are aligning to make this the defining moment for AI-driven water efficiency education in Indian agriculture.
India's Water Crisis Is Accelerating
Groundwater depletion, erratic monsoons, and rising demand are putting India's agricultural water supply under unprecedented stress. The window to change farming practices at scale is narrowing.
AI Can Now Reach Every Farmer
Voice interfaces, regional language models, and affordable smartphones mean AI-powered education can now reach smallholder farmers in their own language — at scale, at low cost.
Every Drop Saved Is a Legacy for the Next Generation
Water saved through better farming is a commitment to intergenerational responsibility. Every efficiency gain we achieve today is a gift to the children who will inherit India's land and water systems.
Our Approach
Not an app. Not a shortcut. A structured commitment to doing this right.
Education First. Technology in Service of the Farmer.
Dhara is not an imported solution or an app launch. It is a structured programme of co-designed education, AI-powered tools, policy advocacy, and connection-building between farmers, researchers, policymakers, and world-class technology — all deeply rooted in the lived realities and real water challenges facing Indian smallholder farmers.
Water-Smart Farming, Made Accessible
The knowledge to farm with less water already exists. Drip irrigation, soil moisture monitoring, crop scheduling, and precision water application are proven techniques — but they remain out of reach for most smallholder farmers due to cost, language barriers, and lack of accessible education. Dhara bridges this gap. Our AI-powered tools translate the best global research in agricultural water management into practical, actionable guidance — delivered in local languages, on basic smartphones, in formats farmers can actually use. Every farmer receives advice personalized to their specific crop, soil, language, and seasonal needs.
  • Guidance on drip, sprinkler, and precision irrigation tailored to crop and soil type
  • Seasonal water scheduling based on local weather, crop stage, and soil moisture
  • Accessible in regional languages via voice and text on low-bandwidth connections
The Technology
What AI-Powered Water Education Actually Means
At Dhara, we are specific about what AI means in our context. Our tools are designed to:
  • Deliver personalised irrigation and water scheduling advice based on crop, soil type, and local weather
  • Identify water stress in crops through image recognition and sensor data
  • Surface global best-practice guidance on water-efficient farming in regional languages via voice and text
  • Connect farmers with irrigation specialists and agronomists for live advisory support
  • Aggregate anonymised farmer data to identify water usage patterns and inform policy advocacy
AI in Action for Water Efficiency
  • A farmer in Maharashtra receives a personalised irrigation schedule for her cotton crop — based on current soil moisture, forecast rainfall, and crop growth stage — delivered in Marathi via voice, reflecting her local conditions.
  • A smallholder in Rajasthan learns how to convert from flood irrigation to drip — with step-by-step guidance, subsidy information relevant to his region, and a connection to a local installation expert.
  • A farmer leader in Punjab contributes real field data to a water usage study that directly shapes state groundwater policy, ensuring policy addresses on-the-ground realities.
Core Principles
What Guides Our Work
1. Water as a Shared Resource & Intergenerational Responsibility
Every litre saved by one farmer benefits the entire community, the ecosystem, and future generations. Water efficiency is not just an economic choice — it is a moral one and a gift to the next generation.
2. Education Before Technology
Tools without understanding don't change behaviour. We invest in genuine farmer education first — AI amplifies that learning, it doesn't replace it.
3. Accessible by Design
Our tools work in regional languages, on low-bandwidth connections, through voice interfaces — because a water education tool that only works for the digitally literate fails the farmers who need it most.
4. Every Drop, Dual Purpose
Water saved through better farming practices is a direct contribution to human welfare. And every proof point of AI improving lives advances the case for AI as a service to humanity.
5. Farmer Voice Driving Policy
Aggregated farmer data and outcomes give us the evidence base to advocate effectively with government agencies for water-smart agricultural policy and infrastructure. Real issues from the ground must drive policy direction, not the other way around.

Our approach is built on one conviction: that the best technology in the world, made personal to every farmer, is how we leave Indian agriculture in a better place for the next generation.
Our Impact
Measured in water saved. Measured in lives changed. Measured in a future secured.
How We Will Measure Success
Impact at Dhara is measured in outcomes that matter — water saved, farmer livelihoods improved, and AI's value to humanity demonstrated. But true success also lies in the enduring connections forged — between farmers, institutions, and the best global knowledge — that will outlast the programme itself and empower future generations.
Baseline measurements will be established before any pilot begins. Impact assessments will be conducted by independent evaluators and results published regardless of outcome — including null results and negative findings.
Focus Regions
Starting Where Water Stress and Farming Density Align
Pilot Geographies
Initial pilots will focus on agro-climatic zones facing acute water stress, high smallholder density, and strong existing community structures — including Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) — that can support trusted, community-led rollout.
Priority states: Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Haryana — selected for their combination of water stress severity, crop water intensity, and digital readiness.
Why These Regions
Among India's most water-stressed agricultural zones
High concentration of water-intensive crops (rice, sugarcane, cotton) with significant efficiency potential
Active FPO networks ready to co-deliver education programmes
Existing relationships with state agricultural universities and irrigation departments
Strong need for transition support from flood to precision irrigation
Built Within Farming Communities, Not Dropped Into Them
Dhara does not parachute technology into communities; instead, we are deeply rooted in the lived realities of Indian farming. We embed ourselves within the structures farmers already trust — working through FPOs, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, self-help groups, and community leaders, recognising these community structures as the foundational bedrock, not merely a delivery channel. Every farmer interaction is tailored, not generic, ensuring advice is personalized to their specific needs, crop, and local context.
  • We train local community champions who become ongoing water-smart farming ambassadors within their villages, building lasting local capacity.
  • Our tools are designed to complement — not replace — the vital work of government extension officers and local irrigation specialists, fostering a collaborative ecosystem.
  • Farmer feedback loops are built into everything: ensuring what water-saving practices work, what doesn't, and what farmers actually need shapes every iteration, reflecting true ground-level realities and informing policy.

Our partnerships are not transactional. They are the connections that will outlast any single programme — linking Indian farmers to the best agricultural knowledge and technology in the world.

Our Stage
Where We Are Now: Building the Right Foundations
01
Community Listening (Current)
Deep engagement with farming communities, FPOs, and water specialists to understand the real issues, water usage patterns, knowledge gaps, and trust requirements across pilot regions.
02
Co-Design & Build
Developing AI water education tools, expert advisory frameworks, and multilingual content in genuine partnership with farmers and research institutions.
03
Pilot & Measure
Deploying tools in selected communities, measuring water savings and behaviour change rigorously, and iterating based on real farmer feedback and impact data.

We are at Stage 1. We are not here to overpromise. We are here to do this right — because the water challenge is too important for anything less.
Governance & Transparency
Accountable to farmers. Transparent to the world.
Advisory & Governance
Governance That Reflects Our Commitments
An initiative making claims about water security and responsible AI must demonstrate those commitments in its own governance structure. Dhara is building an advisory structure that includes, importantly, mechanisms to ensure that the real issues facing farmers — not assumptions or external agendas — shape the direction of the initiative:
Farmer Advisory Council
Progressive farmer leaders whose voices are the primary compass for programme direction, ensuring genuine decision-making influence over water education priorities
Water & Agronomy Review Board
Qualified irrigation scientists and agronomists who validate all water advisory content and AI tools
Community Accountability Panel
Representatives from pilot communities who hold us to account on farmer-first, water-first outcomes
Independent Impact Evaluators
Third-party researchers who assess our water savings claims rigorously and publish findings openly
Government Liaison Group
Ensuring that real farmer community water data and lived experiences are effectively channelled to relevant ministries, water boards, and agricultural agencies, driving policy from the ground up
Governance is not a compliance exercise for us. It is how we ensure this initiative remains genuinely accountable to the farmers and water systems it exists to serve.
Responsible AI
Taking AI Responsibility Seriously in an Agricultural Context
The stakes of AI in agriculture are real. A flawed irrigation recommendation delivered at scale can damage crops, waste water, and erode farmer trust. We take this responsibility seriously.
Our responsible AI commitments:
  • All water advisory content is validated by qualified agronomists and irrigation specialists before deployment
  • We are transparent about the limitations and confidence levels of AI recommendations
  • AI recommendations are tailored to each farmer's specific context; generic advice is not good enough
  • Farmer data is owned by farmers — never sold, never used without consent
  • We actively monitor for bias, particularly against marginal and women farmers
  • Human expert escalation is always available — AI augments, never replaces, human judgement
Our Safeguards
  • Independent agronomic and irrigation science review board for all knowledge content
  • Regular community audits with farmer groups
  • Open publication of methodology, errors, and learnings
  • Grievance mechanisms accessible in local languages
  • No engagement-maximising design — only farmer-first, water-first outcomes
Transparency
We Will Publish What We Learn
Dhara is committed to open learning. Our pilot methodologies, farmer engagement findings, water savings data, and impact assessments — including what didn't work — will be made publicly available. We believe the broader water security and agricultural development community benefits when initiatives share honestly, not just when results are positive.
Key transparency commitments:
  • Open publication of all pilot findings, water savings data, and evaluation frameworks
  • Sharing of anonymised farmer insight data with research institutions and water policy bodies
  • Regular public progress reports accessible to farming communities
  • Honest reporting of null results and programme failures
  • Inviting peer review of our AI water advisory content and methodology

About Us
Born from a conversation. Built for a generation.
The People Behind Dhara
Dhara was born from a conversation – a recognition that the challenges of today, like AI's water footprint, demand solutions that look towards tomorrow. It started not in a boardroom, but among friends and colleagues united by a striking fact: AI data centres consume vast quantities of water. This sparked a question: what if the communities most affected by water scarcity could be the very ones who benefit from AI? What if we could harness technology to leave the world in a better place for the next generation?
Our philosophy isn't about either/or; it's about connection and coexistence. We believe AI and humanity can grow together, creating a virtuous cycle where every drop of water saved through better farming contributes to a world where AI earns its place – not just as a commercial tool, but as a genuine force for human good. Dhara is dedicated to building vital connections: between farmers and world-class agricultural knowledge, between communities and the policymakers who shape their future, and ultimately, between the promise of AI and the enduring needs of humanity.
Madhu
Madhu sees technology not as an end in itself, but as a bridge — and has spent a career making sure that bridge reaches the people who need it most.
Mohit
Quietly indispensable. Mohit does the research that grounds everything we do — making sure our ideas are built on evidence, not enthusiasm.
Shilpa
The fighter and the doer — Shilpa is the one who started the itch that became this initiative. Where others see complexity, she sees a problem worth solving, and won't stop until it is.
Gagan
Brings a deep commitment to equity and inclusion. Champions the voices of women farmers and marginalised communities within the initiative's design and governance.
Suveta
If this initiative has a soul, it's Suveta. Humanity and compassion personified — she is the constant reminder that behind every data point is a person, and behind every person is a life worth fighting for.
Ranjit
The thought leader who makes the room uncomfortable — in the best possible way. Ranjit asks the questions nobody wants to hear, challenges every assumption, and refuses to let good intentions substitute for rigorous thinking.

We started with a conversation. We are building something for the next generation.
Our Commitment
Every Drop Saved Is a Step Towards AI for Humanity
In India, the challenges facing agriculture are immense and deeply complex. Farmers, the backbone of a nation that feeds itself, grapple daily with the vagaries of climate, soil, and limited resources. Water scarcity is not a distant threat but a present reality that demands immediate and thoughtful intervention. Simply put, the stakes for today's farming communities and for the future of our food security could not be higher.
Dhara stands at this critical juncture, committed to empowering these farmers. Our mission is to transform these challenges into opportunities through a multi-faceted approach: providing education that is personalized to each farmer's unique context, advocating for policies rooted in their lived experiences, and forging connections with world-class agricultural knowledge and technological innovation. We believe in harnessing the power of AI to make farming inherently more water-efficient, ensuring that every drop used contributes to a more sustainable and prosperous future.
This is not merely about technological advancement; it's about building a profound legacy. What we cultivate today – the knowledge shared, the water saved, the resilient communities fostered – is a direct investment in the generations to come. Every action we take, every drop saved, is a testament to our commitment to a better world, where technology serves humanity and leaves our planet in a more abundant state.

Education. Advocacy. Connections. For the next generation.
